Music
Our vibrant department is one where pupils gain an unparalleled breadth of experience performing in over sixty concerts a year from a base of over twenty different ensembles. Over half of the school take individual music lessons in a very wide range of instrumental and vocal areas including Musical Theatre, Traditional Scottish Music, Classical, Jazz, Rock and Pop music.
With many of the department’s dedicated team of staff performing at the highest level in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet, our pupils and Music Scholars emulate this, with some performing themselves at national level in the National Youth, National Youth Jazz and National Children’s Orchestras of Scotland, the National Youth Choirs of Scotland and Great Britain and the National Youth Music Theatre. Several Music Scholars also attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama’s Youth Works programme at weekends.
The Music Theatre Programme has seen twelve ALCM performance diplomas being awarded over the past three years and recent performances by Strathallan Theatre include Les Misérables, West Side Story and Sweeney Todd.
The Choral Scholarship programme trains a number of choristers to perform weekly, during term, as a collegiate choir at St Ninian’s Episcopal Cathedral. Their repertoire covers the foundation of the Anglican choral repertory and prepares them for Choral Awards at major UK universities. Among such Universities, former pupils have recently gone on to read Music at Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Newcastle and the Royal Northern College of Music.
