Design Technology - Extra Activities
DT Activities is run as part of the whole School activities programme with the aim of giving pupils the opportunity to pursue their own interest in the subject outwith normal lesson time. Pupils can choose to manufacture one of the set activities projects, or if their skill level permits, a small project of their own choice.
DT Workshops are designed to cater for students who are undertaking coursework as part of their examination specification. DT Workshop is usually arranged so that the subject teacher takes the session for their particular group and each student is advised to attend one session per week.
ACADEMIC TRIPS
Academic trips are seen as an important part in the development and understanding of our young designers. They serve to increase the pupils’ aesthetic awareness and provide the opportunity to visit national collections and to meet practising designers/manufacturers or industrial processors. Academic trips not only provide pupils with a means of collating primary research, but also the opportunity to make essential links with design and manufacture in the real world.
Major academic trips are usually inter-departmental and well-established links exist between the Design and Technology and Art Departments.
Recent trips include: Italy, Germany and Prague.
Excursions closer to home include visits to the Woodschool, The Lighthouse, Highland Spring, House for an Art Lover and the Forth Rail Bridge.
PUPIL ACHIEVEMENTS
The School is a member of the Arkwright Scholarship Trust (www.arkwright.org.uk) and we have had a regular number of scholarships awarded over the years. We also have achieved success in the Audi Young Designer of Year Competition, with pupils gaining recognition in Scottish Finals.
We are also in the unique position of being the only School invited to display work in the Scottish Woodfair exhibition (www.scottishwoodfair.co.uk). The Scottish Woodfair is an annual professional exhibition which promotes the use of products utilising timber grown in Scotland and we are very proud to have our pupils’ work on show as part of this event.
