History
It is our principal aim to encourage an interest in the past and to do so in as enjoyable a manner as possible. Those who have studied History at GCSE level and beyond possess highly marketable skills; historians are to be found not only in the more obvious fields such as archive and museum work and teaching, but also in management, banking and commerce, the media, politics, publishing and the law. Their understanding of ‘what makes people tick’, together with the ability to research, evaluate and synthesise information, to present a logical argument, and to write analytical and objective reports, make historians invaluable in many different fields of employment.
History combines well with Maths and Science subjects to create a broad base of qualifications, enabling a student to move on to a university science-based course. Combined with English and a Modern Foreign Language, History provides a good basis for an arts or languages-based degree.
All pupils at Strathallan study History as part of a broad, balanced curriculum to the end of Third Form, after which it becomes an optional subject for GCSE study. It has proved to be a popular choice for GCSE with around 30-40 pupils a year continuing to study History, and also at Sixth Form level with around ten candidates each year for both Higher and A-level.
