Shooting - Clay Pigeon
Strathallan has had a Clay Shooting Club for over 10 years. Started as a post exam activity for the VIth form, it quickly expanded into a formal club and we entered a team into the Scottish School’s Championship, finishing second. We went onto win the competition for several years in a row and were given our first hand trap by John Lascelles, a former pupil of Strathallan, and we started shooting at school. Since those early days we have become the only school in Scotland, if not the UK, to have our own skeet range and are in the process of setting up our own compact sporting range also.
In the last few years the school has taken over the organisation of the Scottish Championships and more recently entered several teams in the British Schools' Championship held annually in southern England, our A team regularly finishing in the top 6. Last year we finished 4th and were invited to shoot at the CLA Game Fair in the Champions of Champions Shoot-Off, finishing second.
The club not only coaches shooting, but the members also take safety courses and marker courses and the school is affiliated to the SCTA. This year’s captain, Benno Rawlinson, and other older members also learn to coach the younger members and we are presently hoping to add a coaches course to the list of options. The club is a recognised by the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as an official hobby and can be used to gain awards at all levels.
