Support for Learning

The relaxed, friendly and enabling atmosphere of the “Yellow Corridor” encourages pupils to develop self confidence and independent learning.

Many pupils with specific learning difficulties have passed through Strathallan over the years and on the whole do well, some with extremely good results indeed, both at the end of school and after higher education.

The Support for Learning Department comprises two full-time and two part-time teachers.  Each has the Edinburgh University Certificate in Specific Learning Difficulties and one has the Diploma.  All staff are made aware of the difficulties of each pupil.

The department is well equipped with specialist teaching materials.  In Riley, pupils are given a structured programme to meet their individual needs, usually at times when their peers are in Latin or French class.

In third form, Support for Learning pupils generally take only one foreign language and have specialist help in the periods made available.

In fourth and fifth form, support moves more towards help with coursework and GCSE/Standard Grade subjects and in sixth form with study skills and subject support.

The School keeps up with the rapidly changing arrangements allowed by examination boards for pupils with SpLDs, providing readers, scribes, separate accommodation, computers, extra time, etc, to meet individual needs.
Pupils are assessed regularly to ensure individual needs are met and to meet the requirements of the external examination boards.
