Modern Languages
The Department's principal aims are to give pupils an insight into the language, culture and people of one or more foreign countries, encouraging in them positive and sympathetic attitudes to others, and to develop to the limits of their potential pupils' competence in understanding, speaking, reading and writing foreign languages.
All pupils study French in the Junior years. In the Senior curriculum all pupils are offered a taster course in Spanish and German, so that they have the choice of continuing a study of one, two or three modern European languages. We are fortunate to have at Strathallan a considerable number of bilingual pupils and pupils whose first language is not English, including Czech, German, Russian, and Chinese nationals. They are given the opportunity to acquire qualifications in their mother tongue wherever UK Exam Boards offer an appropriate syllabus.
