School Library and Resource Centre

The School Library and Resource Centre is located in the main school building, close to the English Department.  It is staffed by a fully qualified, experienced librarian.  The library comprises three study rooms and a computer room.  There is a book stock of 9,500 volumes (3,500 fiction and 6,000 non-fiction).  Newspapers and magazines are also available.

As well as print material, the Library subscribes to online information databases, which are available to pupils over the school network.  Databases include UK Reference Centre (online newspapers and academic periodicals), Literary Reference Centre (resources for AS/A2 English), and Issues Online (current affairs information). Print and online materials are promoted to pupils by the Librarian working with subject teachers.

The Library is fully automated with an online catalogue, which includes books and websites.  Pupils enjoy using the online catalogue to post book reviews and can place reservations for popular books.

All Riley and 3rd and 4th form pupils have a structured reading period where the Librarian works with the class teacher to promote reading.  Reading progress can be tracked through structured reading activities.  1J pupils work on a Reading Passport, Forms 1 and 2 complete a Reading Challenge, and Form 3 work through a Reading Trail.  Equality of access is provided for dyslexic pupils through appropriate material being available (eg Barrington Stoke books).  The Library also subscribes to the Calibre Audio library (a charity which provides talking books) and through this can borrow books in MP3 CD format.

As part of the Expressive Arts programme for 3rd Form the Librarian runs a book group which aims to motivate even the most reluctant reader through a mixture of games and activities.  Non-traditional formats are used (eg graphic novels, internet story websites).

Promotional activities are organised throughout the year by the Librarian.  Author visits, bookshops and reading award shadowing groups all feature in these activities.

As well as library access during class time, Riley pupils can come to the Library as a twice weekly afternoon activity.  3rd, 4th and 5th Form pupils can attend Library R&R sessions (Research and Reading) held in the evening where the Librarian can help with research or guide personal reading.  6th Form pupils have access to the study areas in the evenings and at the weekend for quiet study.
