Cricket is a main summer sport for boys at Strathallan, running ten teams across all age groups, from U11 to the 1st XI on four dedicated cricket grounds.
The focal point of the cricket programme is the main school ground, The Lawn, with its pavilion built in 1930. We play fixtures at all levels against the other Scottish boarding schools - Fettes College, Glenalmond College, Gordonstoun School, Loretto School and Merchiston Castle School - and day schools in Dollar Academy and Edinburgh Academy. In addition we have 1st XI fixtures against the Strathallians, MCC, XL Club and a Festival at the end of term with Pocklington, Queen Elizabeth School Wakefield and Stewart’s-Melville College from Edinburgh. The 1st XI has pre-season training in advance of the Summer Term.
Our coaching facilities include ten artificial net surfaces in addition to a fully-equipped 3 lane indoor net system that is utilised in the Spring Term on Tuesday evenings for close season coaching. At present we have three members of staff who are qualified cricket coaches.
We have appointed Iain Philip as our coaching professional for 2010. Iain is regarded as probably the best Scottish-born batsmen of any generation. His records speak for themselves – the highest ever individual score for Scotland 234 against MCC, the highest aggregate of runs scored 4831 [average 34.26], and 135 caps. He scored 11 hundreds, with his 234 against MCC and 100 against Australia A in 1998 as highlights. He finished his playing career for Scotland in the 1999 World Cup held in England.
