STRATHALLIAN PREPARES TO MAKE A SPLASH ON THE WORLD STAGE
Former Strathallan School pupil Duncan Scott announced himself on the big stage at the swimming World Championships two years ago - and he is out to make his mark at the same event in the coming days.
Two years ago, then 18, Scott came away from Kazan with a gold medal as part of the 4 x 200m freestyle relay team.
And in recent days the University of Stirling athlete has been in Edinburgh at a holding camp with the rest of the Great Britain team preparing for this year’s World Championships in Budapest.
The diving and open water swimming has already begun in Hungary and the swimming action begins on Sunday.
Scott, now 20, believes his experience in Russia and at the Olympics in Rio last year - when he won two relay medals - has left him in a good place heading into this meet.
“When you are a teenager and you first pitch up at big events you can be a bit star struck and it can maybe affect your performance,” he said.
“In Kazan it was all quite new to me, but I have been competing at a pretty high level for a while now and going into this meet I am not worrying who I am competing against I am just focused on my own performance.
“I feel preparations have gone well and because this British squad was named quite a while ago it has allowed us to go to a couple of low key meets and training camps as a group and we are all looking forward to Budapest.
“This time I will be competing in the 100m and 200m freestyle as well as being available for the relays, so it will be a busy few days, but a meet I think I can do well at.”
Scott is respected by many for the way in which he seems to have kept his feet on the ground despite medalling on the big stage at a young age.
“I find it quite easy to switch off from swimming when I am not training and my mates take my mind off it and we have a laugh,” he stated.
“And also although swimming at a high level is serious I still have fun because it is the sport I love so I never get too bogged down in things and I think that helps in getting ready for a meet like this.”
