Marcus M triumphs at Scottish Junior Indoor Tennis Championships
January 11 2019
Third Form Strathallan pupil and rising tennis ace Marcus M has started the new year in top form, winning the Scottish Junior Indoor Championships under-14 title at Scotstoun in Glasgow over the Christmas holidays.
Marcus comfortably navigated to the final before defeating Euan M 6-0, 6-2 in the showdown match. Marcus reflected on the tournament and his winning match:
I played well and was seeded number two, so I was expected to get to the final. I managed to control the final from the start and I served well. My opponent started to make some mistakes. It’s one of the biggest tournaments I’ve won, especially at under-14 level. I’ve lost the last five or six under-14 finals at grade three level, so it was a good feeling because it’s a main Scottish junior event. I’ve been focusing more and working a bit harder. Now I’d like to get into the top 20 in Britain for under-14s.
Tommy Ogilvie, tennis coach at Strathallan School, was delighted for Marcus:
I am very pleased for Marcus because the last year has been a tough period. There have been times where Marcus had lost all confidence in himself on court and had started to get frustrated with the game. But his discipline returned to his practice, the desire to train harder and with that he started to enjoy his tennis again. And this result certainly proves he is going in the right direction once more… In the last few months there has been a real edge to Marcus’ training.
Marcus now heads down south for an under-14 Tennis Europe event.
Mr Ogilvie added:
That’s the level Marcus needs to be competing at regularly to really challenge himself… The school is very supportive of Marcus and have given him enough time in the day to get his training done along with his academic work.
