Dalmas lives in the Kibera slum around Nairobi and attended the Mashimoni Squatters Primary School. He is now 15 years old, and Strathallan has sponsored Dalmas through fundraising and volunteering since he was just 5.
Strathallan has sponsored 40 pupils for all of their schooling (including uniform and food) for the entire academic year. Our immediate target is to keep these children in school. Our next objective is to help provide much needed photovoltaic power. Each year, a team of Strathallan pupils and staff head out to Nairobi to take part in a two-week summer holiday activities programme for the 600 pupils of the Mashimoni Squatters Primary School. Strathallan and the Gloag Foundation supported the school until it was demolished to make way for a ring-road.
Dalmas was one of the many children displaced by this, and therefore Strathallan helped to get him re-schooled at the Jonathan Gloag Academy in Nairobi. He has now been appointed Head Boy for the whole school, and has come to Strathallan for the term as part of our sponsorship programme. This week Dalmas received his KCPE (High School Entry Exam) results, in which he scored 393 with the top mark nationally across over one million candidates being 440. This meant Dalmas was within the top 2.5% of everyone across the nation. Hongera Rafiki Dalmas!
Dalmas’ next step is to try to get into the right State National High School when he goes back to Kenya at the end of the year. Thanks to the amazing fundraising by our pupils happening right now – and the generosity of our parents, pupils and school community – we are hopeful we can support Dalmas in this important next step.
