Sophie shatters 33-year-old sprint record

Strathallan School pupil Sophie W has etched a new chapter in the School’s history, securing two jaw-dropping personal bests in the 100m and 200m races during an Athletics showdown between Strathallan, Merchiston and Fettes.

Athletics Captain at Strathallan, Sophie sprinted her way into the record books by obliterating the 200m school record that has stood since 1990. Clocking in at a lightning-fast time of 24.6 seconds, she now holds a remarkable 8 school records. When commenting on her most recent success, Sophie said it was thanks to former Strathallan coach John Fleming that she started sprinting.

She said, “Mr Fleming saw me run at my first Sports Day at Strathallan and took me under his wing. I am so glad he did, he pushed me to achieve so much and I wouldn’t be where I am without him.”

John Fleming, former Housemaster, and Athletics coach.

She continued, “I’m really proud of how I ran on Tuesday. It’s nice to leave a legacy, something other pupils can strive towards. I’m looking forward to Sports Day this weekend and seeing what my house Thornbank can achieve this year.”

Sophie was one of 26 senior pupils who competed as a team at Meadow Bank stadium in Edinburgh, with 6 pupils taking podium positions in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m.

Director of Sport at Strathallan, Jim Thompson said, “All our athletes delivered outstanding performances, igniting the spirit of competition and friendly rivalry between the schools. It was fantastic to see so many under 16s and over 16s competing.”

“As we get ready for Sports Day on Saturday, we are looking forward to another action-packed event full of fierce but friendly competition between our Houses. I cannot wait to welcome parents and supporters to Big Acre this weekend.”
