Strathallan Pupil Secures Place on Prestigious Actor Musicianship Degree at Mountview

Strathallan School pupil Olwen H has secured a coveted place on the BA (Hons) Performance – Actor Musicianship course at Mountview, one of the UK’s most prestigious drama schools.

Combining acting, music, singing and movement, the highly competitive degree develops performers into what Olwen proudly describes as a “quadruple threat”—and for her, it’s a dream come true.

“I still can’t quite believe it,” said Olwen, who studies Art, Drama and Music A Levels at Strathallan.

“I’ve been working towards something like this for years - sometimes without even realising it. I started playing music when I was five and completely fell in love with acting. The chance to combine both is incredible.”

Initially considering a gap year, Olwen hadn’t planned to apply for drama school this year. That changed when she discovered the Actor Musicianship course and one of her teachers encouraged her to go for it.

“Once I found Mountview’s course, everything just clicked. I wasn’t expecting to get in as some of the other applicants were older or had done foundation years - but I gave it everything I had. I’m so glad I did.”

Set to start in September, Olwen credits her teachers at Strathallan for encouraging her to take the leap.

“Mrs Carr-Bates cast me in my first lead role and she’s been amazing. Coming to Strath gave me opportunities I’d never imagined—like playing Amélie in our school production. Mr Hamilton encouraged me to believe in myself and go for it. The theatre and music department here are such creative spaces, and being mostly student-led makes it even more special. We get to work hands-on with everything from lighting to stage design, learning from and with our peers.”

Head of Performing Arts and Drama, Mrs Bronwen Carr-Bates, said she couldn’t be prouder.

“Olwen has been an absolute asset to Strathallan. She’s thrown herself into every opportunity in drama and music and has grown into a confident, versatile performer. I’m so proud she’s taking her next step at Mountview—it’s a huge achievement and a well-deserved one. We’ll miss her dearly, but we’ll be cheering her on every step of the way. Don’t forget us when you’re famous, Olwen!”
