Nicholas heads to Wimbledon

Riley pupil Nicholas B is set to play at Wimbledon this summer.

The Road to Wimbledon is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis and gives all U14 players the opportunity to progress through to compete on the world famous grass courts at Wimbledon. More than 7000 girls and boys from over 750 clubs, parks and schools compete to qualify for the National Finals held at Wimbledon in August.

To reach the County Finals, Nicholas first had to progress through scheduled matches at Bridge of Allan Tennis Club in June. Undefeated at his club, Nicholas qualified as club winner for the North of Scotland County Finals in Elgin. This tournament was held over the course of a weekend with the initial rounds played on the Saturday. Nicholas won his 1st and 2nd round matches comfortably to reach finals day on Sunday. He faced a tough opponent in the semi-final which he went on to win 6/2 and 7/6 in a tight second set. In the final he then defeated his opponent 6/2 and 6/3.

As a result of winning the County Finals tournament Nicholas has now qualified to play in the singles and doubles events at the National Finals which are held at The All England Club on the famous grass courts between the 11th – 17th August 2019.

Strathallan tennis coach Tommy Ogilvie commented:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Nic, he’s never been to Wimbledon before and for the first time to go and have the chance to play on the grass at the All England Club, only a few weeks after the Wimbledon Championships have finished, that will undoubtedly be an enjoyable experience that will live with him for the rest of his life. Nic has worked hard for this opportunity and goes with the best wishes of us all at Strathallan.”
