Strathallan paddlers prepare for Junior World Cup

Three paddlers from Strathallan Canoe Club are preparing to race in the Junior World Cup from 30th June to 2nd July in Augsburg, Germany.

Part of the European Canoe Associations’ Six Race Junior World Cup Series, Strathallan School pupils Findlay M, Tally M and Alistair R will compete against some of the best European paddlers in their age groups.

Findlay, who is the Canoe Club Captain and current J18 Scottish Schools Champion and Scottish Champion in C1M, said the trio were excited to be out paddling new courses in Europe.

“We are all looking forward to the competition at the weekend, hoping it goes well for all the Scottish paddlers. Special thanks to Anna Faber who has been helping coach us out here in Augsburg.”

Jane Gibson, the Strathallan Canoe Club’s Head Coach added, “It is a great opportunity for these talented young paddlers to compete in their international age groups. The Augsburg Eiskanal was the site of the first Olympic Canoe Slalom event in 1972 and has been the host to numerous World Cup and World Championships since then. It won’t be easy for our young stars, but they will learn so much and hopefully have great fun.”

Strathallan Canoe Club has a strong history with the school, helping former pupils paddle for Great Britain and Scotland including: Eilidh and Angus Gibson (Canoe Slalom), Crawford Niven (Canoe Slalom), Sandy and Wills Fotheringham (Whitewater Racing) and includes those who have raced for Scotland; Fraser Glasgow and sisters Laura and Natasha Pottinger.

The club, run by Jane and Gary Gibson, utilises the spacious school pond, swimming pool, and local riverways to ensure paddlers get as much time as possible on the water throughout the year.

Strathallan Canoe Club is open to all and welcomes paddlers from all levels for canoe slalom through to paddleboarding and social paddling.

If you are interested, come along and join a taster session at the Bridge of Earn on Saturday 5th August or 12th August.
